A Government Plan to Eliminate Cats

This is absolutely insane. Central planners just never stop.

Via Tyler Cowen:
A regional council in New Zealand has proposed banning all domestic cats in an attempt to protect native animals.
Environment Southland’s “pest plan” calls for all domestic cats in the region to be neutered, microchipped and registered. Then, when a cat dies, residents would not be permitted to have another.
“We’re not cat haters,” John Collins, of the Omaui Landcare Trust told Newshub. “But
we’d like to see responsible pet ownership and this really isn’t the place for cats.”
Ali Meade, the council’s biosecurity operations manager, said that if the move was approved the improvement for the environment and bird life would be vast…
Kapiti Island’s Kotuku Parks subdivision has a no-cat rule and Auckland council is also looking at a plan to euthanise any cat caught in an “ecologically significant site” without a microchip.
Just where do these nut jobs get the idea that birds are always higher on everyone's value scale than cats?

All cat lovers should immediately become supporters of the #PPS where cat lovers could have as many cats as they choose on their own property--forever.

Why is it that authoritarians of every stripe justify their overt acts of violence and destruction by claiming they don't hate the very thing they want erradicated? "We're not cat-haters, you see, but..." "We don't have a problem wih immigration or immigrants, but..."

    1. Yeah, that comes together with the favorite rapists's refrain "Do not resist!".

  2. Why doesn't this regional council just legislate mandatory veganism, to protect all fauna?

  3. The counter-plan calls for all cat haters to be neutered, microchipped and registered. Any cat hater caught without a microchip or caught attempting to neuter, microchip or kill a cat will be summarily fed to kitty's larger, wilder cousin, the lion, the tiger and maybe a grizzly or two.

  4. I've heard similar things in the US about cats being "invasive species" because they "kill birds" (duh!)

Well, they can have my cats when they pry them from my cold, dead hands.

  6. The idiots do not realize that cats kill _sick_ birds which won't reproduce anyway (a healthy bird is hard to catch), and their main prey is rodents - rats and mice - which do a lot more damage to the ecosystem than cats (rats are pretty aggressive in destroying bird nests, see for example: http://articles.latimes.com/2001/may/17/local/me-64643).

  7. Cats are anarchists, so it's not hard to understand why authoritarians want them banned.

  8. Wind turbines kill birds and large solar power installations fry them in mid air but that's okay because it aligns with their political agenda.

For those who believe birds are being fried, go here: www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-solar-bird-deaths-20160831-snap-story.html

  9. How would you address the problem of my neighbor's cats crapping and spreading disease (cat poop spreads diseases that humans can catch) on my private property? I dont like cats, but I dont mind them if they stay off my property. I also like dogs but I would be pretty annoyed if a neighbor let their dogs run wherever they please. It sounds like it is not a matter of disliking cats but trying to keep them from destroying the surrounding ecology. So keep your cats on your property or say bye bye to your kitty.

    2. I see similar problems with many dog owners who think everyone else's property should be their dog's toilet.

My own cats are only outside when we are outside and are brought in when we go in. I know other owners aren't nearly as courteous.

  10. OK, I don't see a problem here, and I have a cat. Well, my wife has a cat.
