Amazon Launches a Cloud Service for US Intelligence Agencies

This morning, Amazon Web Services introduced cloud service for the CIA and other members of the U.S. intelligence community.

Amazon is actually proud of this.

"With the launch of this new Secret Region, AWS becomes the first and only commercial cloud provider to offer regions to serve government workloads across the full range of data classifications, including Unclassified, Sensitive, Secret, and Top Secret," Amazon said in a blog post.

“The AWS Secret Region is a key component of the Intel Community’s multi-fabric cloud strategy. It will have the same material impact on the IC at the Secret level that C2S has had at Top Secret,” said John Edwards, CIO, Central Intelligence Agency.

Bezos is a very mixed bag. He is great on the consumer side but a total Big Brother government friendly creep at the same time.

  1. Amazon is a private company. What's your problem with AMZN providing services to the Govt? Is AMZN breaking some NAP principle in providing the cloud service to people you don't like?

    1. Most directly, as with all government contractors, all of the money paid to AMZN from the government has been forcibly confiscated from taxpayers, and AMZN is actively and knowingly taking possession of this stolen loot. In addition, to the extent the government is engaging in other NAP violations (murder, property damage, etc., which is the intelligence community's specialty) for which use of AMZN's equipment is critical, AMZN could also be regarded as aiding and abetting those NAP violations too.

    2. re: the last part of your statement, please note that the gun is not blamed for murders.

      You NAP-logicians are crazy.

    3. Your first sentence is a correct observation, but not entirely relevant, because inanimate objects are never guilty of anything, only people are. If A and B conspire to commit a NAP violation, A providing the equipment and B the people, I can see in certain situations that A could be found guilty.

  2. This means Bezos will have a backdoor to all the intel... you can't build it without admin privileges.

  3. I'm sure the hacker community is salivating at the possibility of being the first to crack this egg.
