Trump fires acting attorney general after she says Justice Department won't defend Trump travel ban

Via The New York Times:

President Trump fired his acting attorney general, Sally Yates, on Monday after she defiantly refused to defend his travel ban executive order, accusing the Democratic holdover of trying to obstruct his agenda for political reasons.

The president appointed Dana J. Boente, United States attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, to serve as acting attorney general until Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama is confirmed.

“At present, I am not convinced that the defense of the executive order is consistent with these responsibilities, nor am I convinced that the executive order is lawful,” Yates wrote in a letter to Justice Department lawyers.

Trump responded to the letter with a post on Twitter at 7:45 p.m., complaining that the Senate’s delay in confirming his Cabinet nominees had resulted in leaving Ms. Yates in place. “The Democrats are delaying my cabinet picks for purely political reasons,” Mr. Trump said. “They have nothing going but to obstruct. Now have an Obama A.G.”
