A Promising Start for 'Designated Survivor'

Last night, I caught the first episode of the new ABC television series, Designated Survivor, starring  Kiefer Sutherland. It's streaming at no charge on Amazon.

Although it appears the series will show Sutherland, as acting President, as a do good lefty who does good things for the country (by central planning, of course), what is fascinating in the first episode is the character Harris Cochrane, played by  Kevin R. McNally.

He is identified as just a general but is easy to think of him as the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The first episode portrayed him as a scheming, warmonger, desiring to immediately go to war with Iran when there is absolutely no evidence that Iran was responsible for the attack on the Capitol that occurs in the episode. The President resists in a kind of old school lefty fashion, rather than the current real life lefty silence on war since Obama has become president.

The Pentagon is not going to be happy with this series. It has been a long-time since the military has been portrayed in an evil light on network television. Enjoy this while you can. No doubt there is going to be enormous pressure on the show's creator David Guggenheim to change the way the military is portrayed.

  1. Robert- Please check out the show "American Odyssey" (on netflix) I was shocked to find out that it was actually aired on NBC - I don't want to give any spoilers except that is was obviously not picked up for it's continuation in a second season.

    1. I believe the most recent version of the TV show "V" (with Morena Baccarin) was cancelled because it criticized the Obama administration.

The aliens were offering "universal health care" and such.

An obvious dig and a heads-up to viewers as to the dangers of socialism.

  2. Tom Clancy wrote "Debt of Honor" in 1994 that ends with someone flying a 747 into the Capitol. That's how Jack Ryan becomes President.
