The Government and TOR: A Further Warning to Libertarians

As a follow up to my post, A Warning to Libertarians: Please Do Not End Up Like Ross Ulbricht, a TL reader emails:

It really grinds my gears when libertarians promote Tor as a means of keeping ourselves free from government surveillance. Tor is a DOD project that, even now, receives a large portion of its funding directly from the US government (https://www.torproject.org/about/sponsors.html.en ). While you're correct to point out that the government may have infiltrated the alleged Bitcoin anonymiser, it's worth noting the *large* amount of control the government has over the entire backbone of the so-called dark internet.
