Thomas Sowell Warns U.S. May Become Socialist

Thomas Sowell says he fears the U.S. may eventually succumb to socialism.

“I do have a great fear that, in the long run, we may not make it,” Sowell said Tuesday on the Fox Business Network. “I hate to say that. The one thing that keeps me from being despairing is that we don’t know. There are so many things that we can’t possibly know. And so, we may make it, but I wouldn’t bet on it.”

I fear Sowell may be correct. The desire to central plan the lives of others is prevalent these days even amongst many so-called libertarians.

I would venture to guess that the true torch of liberty in the United States is being carried these days by less than 1% of the population. The situation is likely worse in most other countries.

But Sowell is correct, it is a complex world where accurate forecasts are difficult to make but it does look bad.

  1. Why are socialists so much better at marketing than libertarians are?

    1. Self-sufficient people who want to left alone are by design less likely to be politically involved than psychopaths who want power.

  2. They are tapping into people’s innate fear of death and personal failure. So they are marketing an illusion which most people these days seem to want, to assuage that fear. Couple that with the conditioning of 3-4 generations in the welfare state culture of the last 80 or so years.

  3. I think the driving force behind the socialist movement is the universities. Idealistic young people are indoctrinated into the socialist mindset as part of their education. Hopefully we will see alternatives to the traditional university such as online degree programs and technical schools without general education requirements (which is how they manage to indoctrinate STEM majors too) continue to grow.

  4. Socialists are tapping into the vein of envy that runs in so many people. And they have the incredible advantage of having control of education (government schooling, and subsidized universities and colleges), and having such strong influence in the media.

We will lose this war unless, at minimum, we institute a Separation of Education and State. We must stop indoctrinating and brainwashing our young into becoming fanatical collectivists.
